THE ISSUE

Alabama’s upcoming special election on Dec. 12 could result in an important shift in power in the US Senate. Democratic candidate Doug Jones was born and raised in Alabama, where he served as a U.S. attorney for 20 years. He is best known for leading the effort to convict former KKK members for the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church and the resulting murder of four young girls. Jones’ campaign platform includes support for affordable, quality health care, a livable minimum wage, funding for Planned Parenthood, gender pay equity, an end to voter suppression, and support for programs to address climate change. Republican opponent Roy Moore has been accused of sexually assaulting a number of teenage girls when he was in his 30s, and was twice forced to resign from the Alabama Supreme Court for violating federal court rulings on gay marriage and the separation of church and state.  He also lied about collecting nearly $1 million in salary from a questionable religious charity. Senate GOP leadership has called for Moore to step down, but he has emphatically refused.
