Experts are increasingly convinced that November’s election will be marked by a chaotic legal and political landscape. Recent events, including Trump’s own unwillingness to commit to abiding by the results of the election, Attorney General William Barr’s embrace of the president’s groundless electoral fraud claims, and the unprecedented deployment of federal agents against protesters underscore the extreme lengths to which Trump may be willing to go in order to stay in office. Groups like ours are preparing for this possibility, and making plans to mobilize nationwide to demand that every vote is counted and that our democratic systems providing for a peaceful transfer of power are upheld.

There are concrete steps all of us should take right now. The most important thing we can do to ensure a one-term Trump presidency is to work towards a landslide victory for Joe Biden. That means getting out the vote in every county, every day through November 3. In addition to GOTV efforts, we need everyone to sign up for a post-election Count Every Vote mobilization effort near them, tentatively scheduled for 5 pm on Nov. 4, and get trained in nonviolent resistance and de-escalation techniques. Suit Up Maine is part of Protect the Results, a national coalition of voting rights and progressive advocacy organizations. Should Trump lose and then follow through on his threat to ignore the results of the election, we will support the effort to mobilize here in Maine.
